Iran reports two supertankers hit naval mines in Strait of Hormuz
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval force announced that two supertankers collided with naval mines in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels were reportedly attempting to transit through an unauthorized route.
The explosions caused intense fires that disabled the engine rooms of both ships, leaving them immobilized. According to the IRGC, the two tankers were collectively carrying more than 4.5 million barrels of crude oil. Following the impact, the crews evacuated the vessels, leaving the ships abandoned off the southern coast of the strait.
This incident follows a series of maritime escalations in the region. The IRGC reported at least 15 maritime incidents over the last 10 days, claiming responsibility for four attacks while stating 11 other vessels struck mines. Iran has enforced strict regulations requiring all vessels to coordinate with its naval authorities and obtain prior authorization for transit, a measure implemented following the start of hostilities with the United States and Israel on February 28.
