Iran demands US fulfill MOU obligations to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Iran has stated that it will not take any preemptive steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz unless the United States fulfills all its previous obligations and restores the terminated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi outlined three specific conditions for normalizing transit through the strait: the full implementation of US obligations, the cessation of wars on all fronts, and a resolution to the Yemen crisis.

Diplomatic efforts are underway, with Iran reportedly using Pakistan as a channel to communicate its terms to Washington. Following a visit by Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir to Tehran, Pakistan reported ‘significant progress’ in discussions focused on de-escalation and the reopening of the strategic waterway. Qatar has also expressed its intention to continue mediation efforts.

Tensions remain high as US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned that Washington does not rule out renewed airstrikes against Iran. In response, Iran has dismissed US claims regarding mine clearance in the strait as propaganda and warned that any US mine clearance vessels entering the region would be targeted.
