Iran sentences 22-year-old Homayoun Shabankareh to death

Homayoun Shabankareh, a 22-year-old artist and animal rights activist, has been sentenced to death by the second branch of the Karaj Revolutionary Court in Iran. He faces charges of espionage and moharebeh (enmity against God), specifically accused by the judiciary of sending images of combat zones to enemies. Shabankareh has denied these allegations.

According to human rights reports, Shabankareh was arrested at his home on May 14, 2026, following security developments related to military conflicts. During his detention at the Karaj Central Prison, he spent significant time in solitary confinement and conducted hunger strikes.

The sentencing comes amid a reported increase in executions in Iran. Amnesty International noted that authorities have intensified domestic crackdowns under the guise of wartime conditions following recent regional military escalations. Human rights organizations have documented a significant rise in execution rates over the past year, highlighting concerns regarding the right to a fair trial.
