Iran sentences 23-year-old student to death for social media posts

Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old student in Iran, has been sentenced to death for social media posts that authorities characterized as insults to the prophet Muhammad. The sentence was issued by the First Criminal Court of Razavi Khorasan Province on charges of 'sab ol-nabi' (insulting the prophet).

In a separate proceeding, Amini was also sentenced to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison for charges including propaganda against the regime and actions against national security. She is currently being held in the Vakilabad prison in Mashhad.

Amini, who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, argued during her trial that the posts were written while she was under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms. While her defense claimed the expressions were involuntary, the judge rejected this argument.

Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights and Human Rights Activists in Iran, have expressed grave concern over the case. Amini has issued a plea from prison to the United Nations and international human rights groups, asking them to 'be my voice.'
