Iran sentences medical student to death and imprisons activists

Iranian judicial authorities have issued several severe sentences against activists and students following recent protests. In Isfahan, medical student Sepehr Amirzadeh has been sentenced to death. Human rights sources indicate his conviction is linked to providing medical assistance to injured protesters during the January 2025 demonstrations.

Additionally, Mahshad Kashani, a student detained during the same protest period, received a five-year prison sentence, a two-year travel ban, and a two-year ban on social media activity. Other recent detentions include environmental activist Avat Karmi in Kurdistan and Shahriar Shams, a student previously dismissed from Tehran North Islamic Azad University.

In response to these developments, the European Union and 26 other countries issued a joint statement condemning the execution of protesters in Iran. The statement called for an end to the death penalty and the release of those arbitrarily detained, urging Iranian authorities to respect human rights and address public demands.
