Iran sentences protester Taraneh Rahimi to death amid torture allegations

Taraneh Rahimi, a 20-year-old Iranian woman, has been sentenced to death following her involvement in the January protests in Isfahan. Her family reports that her confession was extracted through torture and threats of sexual violence against her twin sister, Romina Rahimi.

Taraneh’s physical health has reportedly deteriorated severely while held at Dowlatabad Prison. Following interrogations where pressure was applied to her knees with a baton, she faces the risk of permanent paralysis. Despite a prison doctor confirming the need for surgery and hospital transfer, prison officials have allegedly blocked medical access and refused to allow her to use medical supports provided by her family.

Both sisters are part of the ‘Shohada Square’ case, which involves 16 defendants. While Taraneh faces the death penalty, Romina has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. The defendants face charges including ‘moharebeh’ (waging war against God).
