Iran sentences two women to death over Isfahan protests
Iranian courts have issued death sentences to two women, Taraneh Rahimi and Leila Abolhasani, in connection with anti-government protests that occurred in Isfahan in January.
Taraneh Rahimi, 20, was sentenced to death alongside nine men following incidents in an Isfahan square that resulted in two deaths, including a member of the security forces. Other defendants in this case received prison sentences of up to 36 years, including Rahimi’s sister, Romina. Defense lawyers have reported being denied access to significant portions of the case files and sufficient time to review evidence.
In a separate case, 43-year-old Leila Abolhasani, a mother of two, was convicted of “waging war against God” for allegedly setting fire to a shop during the protests. Her family denies the charges, claiming she was merely filming the fire. Her case has been referred to the Supreme Court for review.
Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights (IHR), Hengaw, and HRANA, noted that while 29 men have been executed for protest-related charges since the start of the conflict with the United States, no woman has been executed for these specific charges to date, though at least 16 women have been executed this year for other offenses.
