Iranian drone and missile strike kills nine Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq

A drone and rocket attack attributed to Iran hit a Komala‑affiliated Kurdish camp near Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq on Friday at around 04:30 local time, killing nine fighters and wounding two. A second nearby camp was also struck, injuring two more combatants. In a separate incident in the same autonomous region, a weapons depot of Kurdish insurgents was hit by a missile.

The attacks come despite a cease‑fire announced in April, and the Kurdish Komala party condemned them as a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty. The region, rich in oil and hosting U.S. military bases, has been repeatedly targeted since the wider Iran‑U.S. conflict escalated in February. The U.S.–led anti‑jihad coalition reported intercepting eight unmanned aerial vehicles over Erbil during the same period, with no casualties reported from those interceptions.
