Iran‑Kurdish drone strikes persist in Iraq

Overview

The June‑July wave of IRGC‑linked drone and missile strikes on Peshmerga positions, Kurdish camps and U.S. facilities in Iraq’s Kurdistan region has continued to expand. After a booby‑trapped drone was intercepted near the U.S. consulate in Erbil on 25 July and multiple UAVs were shot down over the city and its international airport, officials warned that the threat persisted.

On 27 July Kurdish authorities said a new series of seven drones attacked on 5 August targets associated with Iranian‑opposition groups – the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, the Freedom Party and the National Kurdish Army – around Erbil, Kirkuk and Duhok. The strikes caused material damage, ignited forest fires and damaged a base near Mount Hibat Sultan, but no fatalities were reported. Iraqi Kurdistan leaders attributed the attacks to elements operating from within Iraq, while Tehran has not claimed responsibility.

On 27 July 2026 a further wave of drone strikes hit sites in Erbil, Koya and Daghla and an artillery depot in Sulaimani province. The attacks set forested areas and a PUK artillery storage facility on fire but caused no casualties. Kurdish officials said the headquarters of several Iran‑opposed Kurdish parties were also hit. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said the drones were launched from around Mosul and called on Iraq’s federal government to strengthen regional air‑defence systems. Iran denied involvement, though the pattern mirrors earlier Iranian‑backed operations.
