Iran Supreme Court upholds death sentence for student Amir Hassan Akbari-Monfared

The Iranian Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of Amir Hassan Akbari-Monfared, a 23-year-old accounting student currently held in Evin Prison. The ruling, issued by Branch 41 of the Supreme Court, maintains his conviction for “armed rebellion through membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).”

On October 11, 2026, prison officials, including a deputy warden and a representative from the Ministry of Intelligence, informed Akbari-Monfared of the decision. Authorities presented him with documents requesting clemency and a written expression of repentance and disavowal of the PMOI. Akbari-Monfared declined to sign the documents, referring the matter to his lawyer.

Akbari-Monfared was arrested on January 19, 2025, in Karaj following the deaths of senior judicial officials Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh. While he was accused of involvement in the incident, reports indicate he had no prior knowledge of or involvement in the killings. During his detention in Evin Prison, specifically in Ward 241, he was reportedly subjected to five months of torture. He was previously sentenced to death by Branch 15 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court on July 23, 2026.
