Strait of Hormuz tensions rise amid reports of sunken ship and new Iranian tactics

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated following conflicting reports regarding a maritime incident. The Iranian Navy claims a container ship carrying over 2,500 containers sank in the southern waters of the Strait after striking a naval mine. Conversely, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a 19,000-ton container ship sustained only minor damage from an unknown projectile and was able to continue its voyage.

Iranian officials have indicated a shift in tactics, implementing new methods to target vessels they deem to be in violation of Iranian restrictions. This escalation has contributed to volatility in global oil markets. In response to rising shipping costs and supply disruptions, the Trump administration is reportedly considering easing sanctions on the ‘shadow fleet’ used to transport oil from countries like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela.

On the security front, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the destruction of an Iranian-linked sailing vessel in the Gulf of Oman that was conducting surveillance and targeting operations against US Navy ships. Meanwhile, IRGC Navy Commander Ali Ozamai issued a warning, stating that Iranian forces are prepared to sink US warships approaching the Strait.

Additionally, a senior United Nations official warned that the disruption of maritime traffic could trigger a food security crisis in parts of Asia and Africa. The official urged the US and Iran to agree on a UN-backed plan to facilitate the safe passage of fertilizer through the waterway to avoid missing critical planting seasons.
