Iran threatens military action to break U.S. naval blockade

Iran has announced a shift from a defensive to a ‘fully offensive’ military strategy, warning it may use force to break a United States naval blockade if diplomatic efforts fail. A high-ranking Iranian official stated that Tehran has given Washington a deadline of several weeks to fulfill the terms of a provisional agreement reached in June.

The dispute centers on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global maritime route for oil and liquefied natural gas. While a memorandum signed on June 17 established a 60-day window to reach a broader agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program and U.S. sanctions, the deal has stalled due to conflicting interpretations of control over the strait.

Tehran has expressed diminishing confidence in achieving a lasting truce through diplomacy. If negotiations collapse, officials indicated Iran could launch a ‘timely and precise’ military strike to bypass the blockade, potentially leading to significant escalation in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region.
