Iran threatens retaliation as US expands economic sanctions
Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated following the expansion of Washington’s economic sanctions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new sanctions targeting approximately 60 individuals, entities, and vessels, warning that countries maintaining economic ties with Tehran could lose access to the dollar-based financial system.
In response, Iranian officials have signaled a shift from a purely defensive posture. Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh stated that Iran is prepared for these measures, while representatives from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that any attacks on Iranian infrastructure could result in heavy strikes against US vital interests and energy chokepoints, including the Strait of Hormuz.
China has expressed opposition to the increased pressure, stating that sanctions are not a solution to disputes and affirming its intent to protect its own interests. Meanwhile, Pakistan has reported significant progress in negotiations aimed at reducing tensions, potentially positioning itself as a mediator to facilitate dialogue between the two opposing powers.
