Iran threatens retaliation as US expands sanctions on evasion networks

The United States has announced new measures to target networks used by Iran to evade existing sanctions. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the measures include secondary sanctions against trading partners in sectors such as digital assets, technology, and maritime transport.

While the Trump administration’s “Economic D-Day” did not introduce new massive sanctions, it focused on strengthening and expanding the enforcement of current restrictions. Washington warned that nations failing to reduce economic ties with Iran could face harsher penalties.

In response, Iranian officials have threatened a significant retaliation, describing their strategy as a combination of “chess and poker.” Tehran has warned of potential economic and military consequences, including attacks on regional oil producers and European interests. Officials also suggested the possibility of revising Iran’s nuclear doctrine as a means of pressure.

Concerns regarding global energy security remain high, as Iran has previously disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the Houthi movement in Yemen continues to target oil infrastructure in the Red Sea.
