US prepares major sanctions against Iran amid threats to halt Gulf oil exports

The United States is preparing to launch what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent describes as “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary,” involving a new round of severe economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners. The announcement comes amid a six-month conflict and heightened tensions regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iranian officials have issued warnings of economic retaliation. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, stated that if the “economic war” continues, Iran could halt all oil exports from the Gulf, including through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged the country is in a “full-scale economic, military, and security war,” noting the severe impact on domestic livelihoods and inflation.

The geopolitical tension has already impacted maritime activity. Data from Kpler indicates a significant reduction in commercial vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with only thirteen vessels passing on Saturday and four on Sunday. This disruption, combined with the threat of new sanctions, has contributed to a decline in oil prices, with Brent crude futures falling by more than 1% to $93.45 per barrel.
