Iran threatens to target undersea internet cables in Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued warnings that undersea internet cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz could become targets in a potential conflict with the United States and its allies. IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi identified seven major internet cables running beneath the strait, noting their critical role in global commercial and internet data traffic.

This follows previous statements by Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who suggested that regional technological assets—including data centers and artificial intelligence facilities associated with the U.S.—could be targeted if warfare resumes. Brigadier General Yadollah Javani emphasized that Iran would utilize its full capacity to respond to any attacks on its own infrastructure.

The threats come amid heightened regional tensions and stalled negotiations between Tehran and Washington. While Pakistan’s military chief, Asim Munir, has visited Tehran in an attempt to mediate between the U.S. and Iran, diplomatic efforts remain difficult. Qatar has also called for restraint, warning that targeting such infrastructure would negatively impact the entire region, including the Iranian people.
