Iran and Oman reach preliminary Strait of Hormuz shipping agreement

Iran and Oman have reached a preliminary agreement on new shipping routes and a “shipping map” to manage traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This arrangement aims to uphold sovereignty and ensure safe transit, though the final details regarding security and transit fees remain under discussion.

Simultaneously, the Iranian parliament is reviewing legislation that would grant Tehran regulatory control over the waterway. The proposed law could impose transit fees of up to 7% of cargo value—and fines up to 20% for non-compliance—while potentially banning vessels linked to the United States and Israel.

These developments occur amid ongoing maritime instability. The International Maritime Organization reported 65 vessel incidents and 17 seafarer deaths in the region as of August 11. While Iran seeks the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade and the release of frozen assets, the United States has stated that its blockade remains in full force.
