Iran to close state buildings to conserve fuel amid energy crisis

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced plans to close or consolidate various state-owned facilities, including conference halls, swimming pools, and many government buildings, to conserve fuel and address an ongoing energy crisis. Speaking at a Fuel Committee meeting involving officials from the ministries of Interior, Petroleum, Energy, and Industry, Mines and Trade, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for the government to lead by example in correcting electricity consumption models.

The country is facing significant electricity shortages, largely driven by insufficient fuel supplies for thermal power plants, which account for over 86% of Iran's electricity production. A decrease in natural gas supply and declining liquid fuel stocks have exacerbated the issue. In Tehran, residents have experienced two-hour electricity outages every other day.

To mitigate the crisis, the government is considering the widespread installation of rooftop solar panels on public buildings, such as governorates. Pezeshkian also stressed the importance of public awareness regarding the energy situation, urging citizens and production units to contribute to improved energy management. Concerns remain that increased residential natural gas consumption during cold weather could further strain supplies and worsen electricity availability during the winter months.
