Iran to implement weekly car-free days to manage fuel crisis

Iran is implementing new regulations for public institutions to manage fuel consumption and reduce air pollution. President Masoud Pezeshkian announced the introduction of a weekly ‘car-free day’ to address these issues.

In addition to the car-free initiative, the government is considering the expansion of remote work and the reduction of unnecessary intercity travel. These measures aim to improve environmental quality and manage the nation's fuel usage.

The move comes amid a significant gasoline deficit. According to Yaser Mirzai, Deputy Head of the Iran Energy Efficiency Organization, daily gasoline consumption has averaged 135 million liters, while daily production is approximately 120 million liters. This leaves a daily deficit of roughly 15 million liters that must be covered through imports.
