Iran to reduce gasoline quotas without increasing official fuel prices
Iran is implementing changes to its gasoline quota system to manage consumption and address energy imbalances. According to Ali Nikzad, Vice Speaker of the Parliament, the official prices for the three existing gasoline tiers will remain unchanged, but the volume of subsidized fuel available to consumers will be reduced.
Under the new plan, the 60-liter monthly quota at the 1,500 Toman rate will remain the same. However, the 70-liter quota at the 3,000 Toman rate will be reduced to 50 liters, and the 30-liter quota at the 5,000 Toman rate will be cut to 15 liters. This results in a total monthly reduction of 35 liters per vehicle, bringing the total monthly quota from 160 liters down to 125 liters.
While the government maintains that prices are not increasing, the reduction in subsidized volume effectively shifts the economic burden to consumers. The move aims to mitigate the gap between domestic gasoline production and high consumption levels, which currently faces a daily deficit of approximately 14 to 15 million liters.
