Iran threatens to keep Hormuz closed and pressure US by targeting Bab al‑Mandeb

Iran’s armed forces have declared that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States accepts Tehran’s conditions, asserting full control over the waterway. Iranian military officials warned that any U.S. strike on Iran’s power infrastructure would trigger the Houthis in Yemen to close the Bab al‑Mandeb strait, the Red Sea gateway, adding a second pressure point against Washington.

The strategy aims to disrupt the two main global oil export routes – Hormuz, which carries about one‑fifth of world oil, and Bab al‑Mandeb, accounting for roughly seven percent of energy supplies. Analysts say simultaneous closures could send oil prices soaring toward $200 per barrel and cause a severe worldwide energy shock. The closure has already left more than 130 tankers and gas carriers stranded west of Hormuz, highlighting the immediate impact on maritime traffic.

Iran’s calls for the Houthis to prepare for action, combined with its threats to maintain control of Hormuz, deepen regional tensions and raise the risk of a broader conflict affecting U.S., Saudi and Yemeni interests.
