Iran-U.S. war continues despite leadership strikes and maritime disruption

The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, continues to impact regional stability and global energy security. Early military strikes successfully targeted high-level Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military commanders. However, the Iranian political structure has remained intact, with a new supreme leader emerging and government institutions continuing to function.

In the Strait of Hormuz, ongoing attacks on commercial vessels and a U.S. maritime blockade have severely disrupted shipping routes vital for global oil transportation. While a Memorandum of Understanding intended to facilitate a peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran expired on August 17, 2026, recent waves of attacks in July and late August have hindered de-escalation efforts. U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait for oil deliveries.

Amidst the instability, Qatar is attempting to mediate a peace plan. The conflict has also prompted international concerns regarding civilian safety, with the Japanese government conducting overland evacuations for its nationals from Tehran to Azerbaijan earlier in the year.
