Iran war costs average US household $2,000

An analysis by Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, indicates that the war with Iran has cost the average American household approximately $2,000 over the past eight months. This figure is derived from an assessment of rising fuel costs, increased interest rates, and military tax allocations.

Energy prices represent the largest portion of this economic burden. According to Zandi, individual households bear $1,100 in additional gas and diesel costs, which total over $100 billion nationally according to Brown University’s Climate Solutions Lab. Other contributing factors include rising home heating fuel prices and increased costs for commercial transport, such as long-haul trucking and cargo aviation.

Beyond consumer energy prices, the Congressional Budget Office reported that Department of War costs for the conflict reached approximately $38 billion as of August 1, with costs expected to rise by $3 billion per month. This military expenditure translates to an estimated $360 monthly cost per taxpaying household. Additionally, the conflict has contributed to inflation, leading the Federal Reserve to implement interest rate increases.
