Iran war lifts European inflation and oil prices
The conflict in Iran has raised food and energy costs across Europe. Austria reported a consumer‑price inflation rate of 2.7 % in July, driven by higher food prices linked to heat, drought and the war’s impact on commodity markets. The Austrian government also extended the fuel‑price relief, cutting the mineral‑oil tax by 1.9 cents per litre until the end of August.
In the Netherlands, the national statistics office calculated that inflation rose to 3.1 % in July, largely because the oil price jumped after the Strait of Hormuz blockade removed roughly 20 % of global oil output and a fifth of gas exports. Analysts at the International Energy Agency said the disruption was the largest ever, but the overall effect on European growth and inflation is limited thanks to lower oil dependence, strategic reserves and diversified supply sources. The European Central Bank’s 2 % price‑stability target remains far out of reach, with President Christine Lagarde warning inflation will stay well above that level through 2027.
