Iran war risks triggering crises beyond the Middle East

Six months into the conflict, the war between the United States and Iran has become a “nightmare for all those involved, even indirectly,” according to a report by CNN. The conflict has resulted in a disaster for the Iranian people, millions in the Middle East, and global consumers facing rising prices.

While initial U.S. war objectives included regime change and the total abandonment of Iran's nuclear ambitions, recent demands have shifted toward the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the limitation of Tehran's nuclear program. The report notes that the unintended consequences of the war extend beyond the Middle East, impacting global security and diminishing U.S. international prestige.

Furthermore, the focus on the Iranian crisis has led the Trump administration to overlook other global flashpoints, including Ukraine, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the Korean Peninsula. This shift is evidenced by reduced military exercises with South Korea and the withdrawal of the only U.S. aircraft carrier from the Western Pacific. Additionally, Iran's de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a global oil crisis.
