Yahya Rahim Safavi, a military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, has warned that any renewed attacks by the United States or Israel could expand the regional conflict into the Indian Ocean. This marks the first time an official advisor has explicitly identified the Indian Ocean—home to the strategic US-British military base at Diego Garcia—as a potential theater of war.

Safavi noted that the conflict has already moved from the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea, where Houthi rebels have strengthened control over the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Additionally, Safavi stated that Iran intends to manage the Strait of Hormuz entirely under its own control.

Amid these warnings, diplomatic efforts continue. During the UN General Assembly in New York, Iranian and American representatives engaged in a two-hour exchange of messages facilitated by Qatari mediators. Iran has outlined specific conditions for resuming formal diplomacy, including an end to US aggression, a cessation of multi-front warfare, and the unblocking of frozen Iranian assets.
