Iran implements new transit fees and penalties in Strait of Hormuz
Iran has announced new maritime regulations and fee structures for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) warned that ships violating Iranian transit protocols could face penalties including fines, detention, or confiscation. The authority has advised cargo owners to consult a list of “Non-Compliant Vessels” before chartering ships to avoid these restrictions.
Simultaneously, an Iranian parliamentary committee has approved a provision in a draft law that would allow Tehran to charge fees for services provided within the waterway. These fees are intended to cover navigation, environmental protection, security, insurance, and refueling under specific circumstances. The fees may be collected in Iranian rials or other designated currencies.
These developments occur amid heightened geopolitical tensions. US President Donald Trump recently characterized the Strait of Hormuz as “American territory” during a campaign rally, though he provided no legal basis for the claim. The waterway remains a critical global energy route and a focal point of friction between Iran and the United States.
