US airstrikes intensify conflict with Iran over Strait of Hormuz

The United States re‑imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and launched a second wave of precision airstrikes against Iranian coastal defenses, missile‑storage sites, command centres and surveillance installations, including on Greater Tunb Island and around Bandar Abbas. U.S. Central Command said the operations also disabled an unladen Curacao‑flagged tanker that ignored multiple warnings and attempted to sail toward Iran's Kharg Island. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan and warned it will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until the American attacks stop. Shipping data showed vessel transits through the strait fell sharply after the blockade, with only nine ships crossing on July 16, down from thirteen the day before. Iranian health officials reported at least 35 deaths and more than 300 injuries from the U.S. strikes, while U.S. officials cited no civilian casualties. Diplomatic attempts remain stalled; President Donald Trump claimed Iran wants an agreement, while Vice‑President JD Vance defended continued negotiations despite the renewed hostilities. The fighting threatens a vital oil‑and‑gas corridor that carries about one‑fifth of global energy supplies.
