Iran sentences blogger Marzieh Ebrahimi Shamsabadi to death
Iranian blogger Marzieh “Sevda” Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, 33, has been sentenced to death by the Bandar Abbas Revolutionary Court. She was convicted of “corruption on earth,” a charge that includes insulting the Supreme Leader, conducting media and propaganda activities against national security, and working for hostile governments.
Authorities also accused Shamsabadi of photographing a missile strike location and transmitting the image to a Persian-language media outlet based outside of Iran. In addition to the death penalty, the court imposed a prison sentence of two to five years, ordered the confiscation of her property, and banned her from accessing certain public services.
Shamsabadi has been held at Bandar Abbas Prison since March and reportedly spent 20 days in solitary confinement. Her health has reportedly deteriorated during detention, with reports indicating she suffers from multiple conditions, including multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and narcolepsy.
This ruling comes amid heightened international concern regarding Iran’s use of capital punishment against political dissidents. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has criticized the increasing use of death sentences in the country, stating they are used to “instill fear and silence opposition.” The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights reported that Iran has executed 950 people so far this year.
