Kurdistan PM's office targeted by Iranian drones in Erbil

Two explosive-laden drones targeted the personal office of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the head of the region's Security and Intelligence Agency (Parastin) in the Pirmam area of Erbil province. The attacks occurred around 12:28 AM local time on Monday, August 17.

KRG security agencies and the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit reported that the drones were launched from Iranian territory. While the strikes hit the intended locations, no casualties were reported. Prime Minister Barzani condemned the incident as “reckless and unacceptable,” describing it as a “dangerous escalation” and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan region.

The incident follows a history of tension between Iran and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, with Tehran frequently accusing Kurdish authorities of harboring Iranian opposition groups. Previous attacks in the region have targeted critical energy infrastructure, including oilfields and gas fields.
