Iranian President Pezeshkian visits New York amid ongoing conflict
Iranian President Mahmoud Pezeshkian traveled to New York this week for the UN General Assembly, marking the first time a president of a country at war with the United States has been permitted to visit. The visit occurred amid a seven-month conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Pezeshkian appeared exhausted during negotiations with U.S. envoys and meetings with world leaders. Since the conflict began on February 28th, the President has frequently operated his government from underground locations to avoid air strikes that have previously killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking officials.
In a notable security arrangement, the U.S. Secret Service and the New York Police Department provided protection for Pezeshkian in coordination with his own security detail from the Revolutionary Guards, a military branch that has been a frequent target during the ongoing war.
