Iranian prisons face hunger strike and solitary‑confinement abuse

A collective hunger strike began on 13 July at Ghezel Hesar prison, where roughly 1,500 death‑row inmates protesting the planned execution of six drug‑related prisoners refused food. The strike continued at least until 16 July, with prisoners demanding a halt to the executions and refusing medical transfer despite deteriorating health. Earlier, an October 2025 hunger strike of similar scale forced authorities to temporarily suspend executions in the facility.

Separately, political detainee Massoud Jamei was transferred to solitary confinement at Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz after chanting protest slogans. He is being held in a cell without air‑conditioning amid extreme heat, has had his head shaved, and faces severe physical and psychological pressure. Jamei suffers from multiple serious illnesses, and officials have refused to move him to a medical facility.
