Najmeh Amini sentenced to death in Iran for blasphemy

Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student in Mashhad, has been sentenced to death by an Iranian court for blasphemy. The charge, known as ‘sab ol-nabi’ (insulting the Prophet), stems from a social media post that authorities claim insulted religious figures. Amini is currently held in Vakilabad Prison.

In a separate judicial proceeding, Amini was also sentenced to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison for charges including acting against national security and spreading propaganda against the regime. Her defense argued that the controversial post was written while she was experiencing hallucinations after consuming psychedelic mushrooms, but the judge rejected this claim.

Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights and Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI), have raised alarms over the sentence, viewing it as part of a broader crackdown on digital expression following the mass protests in January. Amini released an audio message from prison appealing to the United Nations and international human rights groups to intervene. The death sentence is not yet final and remains subject to appeal before the Supreme Court of Iran.
