Iran's Abbas Araghchi says US talks remain mediated by Qatar and Pakistan
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that no decision has been made to resume formal negotiations with the United States. While direct talks are not currently occurring, Araghchi noted that communication is being maintained through mediators in Qatar and Pakistan.
Regarding maritime security, Araghchi clarified that technical discussions between Iran and Oman concerning shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz are separate from any potential negotiations with the U.S. He emphasized that the full reopening of the Strait for commercial traffic is contingent upon the United States fulfilling specific agreement terms.
These developments follow comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that the Strait of Hormuz could be declared U.S. territory following a defeat of Iran. A senior White House official has dismissed the President's remarks as a joke. The ongoing tension in the Strait has significantly reduced maritime traffic compared to normal levels.
