Iran's banks and agriculture report sharp growth in assets and output
Iran's banking sector saw foreign assets surge 78.9% at the end of the last Iranian year, reaching 169 quadrillion rials (about $129 billion) compared with $72.3 billion a year earlier. Total assets and liabilities rose 58.4% to roughly $411 billion. Analysts note that international sanctions remain a challenge, and discussions with the United States focus on releasing frozen Iranian funds, including about $6 billion transferred from South Korea to Qatar.
In agriculture, Iran’s Minister of Agriculture reported a four‑fold increase in production since the pre‑1979 period, with total output climbing from 28 million to 139 million tons. Wheat harvests rose from 4 million to over 16 million tons, milk production jumped from 2.6 million to 13 million tons, and chicken meat increased from 165,000 tons to roughly 3 million tons. Agricultural exports grew from $300 million to $7.3 billion, reflecting significant sector expansion despite ongoing pressures.
