Iran market rally persists, small‑cap liquidity up
Entities: Weighted Index · Tehran Stock Exchange · Real investors · Fixed‑income funds · Iranian equities market
Overview
The Tehran Stock Exchange kept its upward momentum through late July. On 27 July the total index climbed another ≈56,000 points (about 1.1 %) to around 5.05 million, marking a second straight day of gains. Transaction volume reached roughly 29.7 trillion rials and ordinary‑share turnover exceeded 25 trillion rials, while net outflows of real‑money investors narrowed to about 82 billion rials and gold‑fund orders hit 442 billion rials.
By 1 August, activity shifted toward smaller caps: the value of small‑cap trades rose to roughly 14.3 trillion rials, crossing the 10‑trillion‑rial mark for the week and signalling improved liquidity. Nevertheless, a net outflow of about 580 billion rials from real‑money funds persisted, and the overall market index slipped by roughly 29,400 points, even as the weighted index gained over 8,000 points. Analysts view the heightened small‑cap turnover as a liquidity boost rather than a clear sign of a sustained rally, while caution among domestic investors remains evident.
On 1 August the market surged again, with the total index jumping 2.17 % (about 110,000 points) to 5,164,730, driven by strong buying and a pronounced shift of roughly 1,300 billion rials from fixed‑income funds into equities. Small‑cap turnover spiked to about 500 billion rials within the first 15 minutes, and 760 symbols traded in positive territory. The previous session had seen a 19,000‑point dip before a late‑day rebound; market‑wide turnover was about 17,000 billion rials, and the equal‑weight index continued to rise by more than 8,000 points, underscoring divergent performance between large‑cap and smaller stocks.
