Tehran Stock Exchange hits record highs then faces decline

Overview

Following a period of volatility in early September, the Tehran Stock Exchange resumed its upward trajectory. On 5 September, the main index rose by approximately 97,000 units, reaching the 6,601,000 level. This growth was characterized by broad participation across various symbols, including the ‘Famli’ symbol, while the equal-weighted index climbed above 1.8 million.

Retail liquidity remained a key driver, with 1,800 billion tomans flowing into stocks and equity funds. Sector-specific trends showed significant retail inflows into mining, basic metals, and pharmaceuticals, whereas the banking and telecommunications sectors experienced notable outflows. By 8 September, the total index surpassed the 7 million mark for the first time, reaching 7,091,068.

On 15 September, the market reached a new milestone as the total index surpassed the 7.5 million mark to close at 7,557,642 units. This surge was driven by large-cap stocks such as Tasiko, Foolad, and Shabandar, while retail trading value hit a record high of approximately 68,331 billion tomans. Concurrently, analysis of the Mining and Metals Development Company indicated its total net asset value is estimated at 506.5 trillion tomans, significantly higher than its market value of 188.8 trillion tomans.

However, the upward momentum shifted by 19 September as the exchange faced significant selling pressure. The main index dropped by 157,228 units to settle at the 7.2 million level, marking a second consecutive day of losses. Retail capital saw a notable outflow of 6.1 trillion tomans, and the number of sell orders surged from 43 to over 500, leaving approximately 16 trillion tomans in sell queues. The equal-weighted index also fell to 1,946,000, while the Iran Fara Bourse index declined to 56,627.
