Iran central bank governor denies economic collapse amid US blockade

Abdolnaser Hemmati, Governor of Iran’s central bank, has dismissed United States claims of an Iranian economic collapse as “illusions” during an International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok. Despite these denials, Iran is facing severe economic pressure due to intensified US sanctions and a naval blockade.

According to energy intelligence platform Vortexa, Iran’s seaborne crude oil exports dropped to zero in the second week of September, down from a 14-day average of 230,000 barrels per day earlier in the month. This follows the launch of “Operation Economic Outcast” by Washington on August 24, aimed at severing Iran’s remaining financial and commercial ties to the global economy. The US also expanded its campaign in September to target Iranian airlines.

The Iranian economy is experiencing significant instability. The national currency, the rial, has lost nearly 35 percent of its value against the US dollar since July. Additionally, the Statistical Centre of Iran reported that annual inflation reached 73.6 percent in September. To combat these issues, the central bank launched a program in late September to sell up to $2 billion through state banks to support the rial and prioritize the procurement of essential goods and medicines.
