Iran market volatility and inflation trends

Overview

Since early July 2026, Iranian market bulletins have tracked extreme volatility across foreign currencies, gold, and commodities. By early August, economists warned that exchange-rate hikes and consumer-goods price increases of over 100% were pushing the economy toward hyperinflation. On 18 August, the Iranian rial lost value against both the US Dollar and the Pakistani Rupee, with the US Dollar trading between approximately 1,872,000 and 1,882,000 IRR in the free market. On 23 August, the rial reached a new record low amid expectations of additional United States sanctions. Inflationary pressures have heavily impacted the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors. While previous reports noted a producer price index of 114% for pharmaceuticals, Ahmad Aryainejad of the Parliament’s Health and Treatment Commission reported that prices for some imported single-ingredient drugs have increased by as much as “10 to 20 times,” occasionally driving products to the black market. Data from the Statistical Centre of Iran on 27 August indicates the annual consumer inflation rate reached 69.9 percent, with food, beverages, and tobacco inflation at 127.5 percent. As of 31 August, the Central Bank of Iran reported that the value of 43 currencies increased against the rial compared to late August, setting the official US dollar rate at 1,589,555 rials. Regarding the automotive sector, the government is reviewing proposals to implement a minimum vehicle import duty of 100 percent. By 2 September, the economic crisis intensified as the US dollar surpassed the 2.1 million rial mark on the free market, representing a roughly 60 percent loss in the rial’s value since March. This collapse is attributed to ongoing sanctions, US-imposed naval blockades on Iranian ports, and the severance of access to regional banks by the US Treasury. Year-on-year point-to-point inflation is now reported between 84% and 89%. By 10 September, the pharmaceutical crisis deepened.
