Iran's Food and Drug Organization addresses thalassemia medication access
Dr. Mohammad Hashemi, spokesperson for the Food and Drug Organization, addressed concerns regarding the rising costs of thalassemia medications. He noted that while some claims suggest costs have multiplied, a precise assessment requires looking at the specific drug type, timeframe, and the patient's out-of-pocket expenses after insurance coverage.
Hashemi stated that the majority of thalassemia medication needs are met through domestic production. Iranian-made versions benefit from significant insurance coverage, which helps reduce costs for patients. However, the import of certain foreign brands has decreased due to difficulties in currency transfers and financing challenges.
Foreign medications are generally more expensive than domestic alternatives, and access to them has become more limited under current conditions. The Food and Drug Organization aims to balance support for domestic manufacturing with the necessity of importing essential foreign drugs to meet specific patient needs and ensure continuous treatment.
