Iran's Foreign Minister sets conditions for U.S. negotiations

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that there are currently no direct talks occurring between Tehran and Washington, although third parties are attempting to facilitate a resumption of negotiations. Araghchi emphasized that Iran will not return to the negotiating table until the United States ceases violations of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and provides reparations for past breaches.

Araghchi further claimed that following an initial period of conflict where U.S. President Donald Trump demanded the “unconditional surrender” of Iran, the United States sought to initiate negotiations approximately 20 days after the onset of hostilities. He asserted that Iran’s resistance demonstrated its strength as an “invincible power” despite military pressure.

Regarding maritime security, Araghchi noted that negotiations with Oman are in the final stages concerning the determination of a new shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz. While these experts are working on alternative maritime paths, he clarified that this does not imply the full opening of the Strait, as final decisions depend on various conditions and factors.
