President Donald Trump has rejected a seven-day proposal from Iran aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting nuclear negotiations. Trump stated that the rejection is due to Iran’s perceived weakness, arguing that Tehran is seeking a deal because it is “losing so badly” and facing severe financial pressure.

Iran’s proposal, mediated by Qatar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, requires the United States to take several concrete steps before the waterway is reopened. These conditions include lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and releasing approximately $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets. Additionally, Tehran is calling for a broader regional ceasefire that would include Lebanon and Yemen.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi maintained that Tehran remains firm on its conditions but has not yet received an official response through mediators. While Araghchi stated that Iran has not closed the door to diplomacy, he also warned that the country is prepared to resume hostilities if necessary. The current impasse follows the collapse of a previous memorandum of understanding signed in June, which had intended to address similar issues.
