Italy Plans Fast‑Track Return to Nuclear Power with Modular Mini‑Reactors

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy will accelerate the restart of nuclear power by focusing on safe, modular mini‑reactors. A law on powers is to be passed this summer, followed by the necessary executive decrees. The framework for reviving nuclear generation was approved by the Council of Ministers in February 2025, and the Energy Security Minister outlined a plan to have the programme ready by the end of 2027. Meloni noted that a referendum may still be required before nuclear facilities can be rebuilt, recalling the 1990s vote that halted the sector after the Chernobyl disaster.

The government aims to use the new technology to boost Italy’s competitiveness and energy security while meeting environmental standards.
