Iran's Karaj and Tehran Dams Reach Mixed Capacity Levels, Urging Conservation
The Alborz Water Company reported that the Karaj dam is 88% full, up from 41% at the same time last year, with an inflow of about 1.32 million cubic meters this year. Manager Davood Najfian warned that the unusually hot weather could increase evaporation and that continued wasteful use—such as excessive car‑washing and over‑irrigation of green spaces—could threaten the reservoir’s sustainability.
In Tehran, the latest figures from the Water Resources Management Company show varied reservoir levels: Amir Kabir at 87% (156 million m³), Latiyan at 90% (68 million m³), Lar at 9% (89 million m³), Mamloo at only 15% (38 million m³) and Talqan at 56% (233 million m³), a 5% drop from the previous year. Overall, roughly one‑third of Tehran’s water storage capacity remains empty, leaving a shortfall of about 200 million m³ despite an 18% rise in this year’s rainfall, which is still 34% below the long‑term average. Authorities stress the need for public water‑saving measures.
