Iran's National Iranian Oil Company accounts frozen over debt
Iran's state-owned lender, the Bank of Industry and Mine, has frozen the bank accounts of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) because of mounting debts. The debt, estimated at nearly $17 billion, cannot be repaid through proceeds from the Azadegan oilfield, according to Mehdi Ghazanfari, head of the National Development Fund, who said bureaucratic obstacles and sanctions have limited financing options.
The account blockage highlights the financial pressure on Iran's largest revenue source amid U.S. sanctions, underinvestment and reliance on domestic financing. Analysts note that instability in Iran's oil sector could affect traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil‑shipping chokepoint, prompting market monitoring of potential disruptions.
