Iran‑US talks in Switzerland focus on Hormuz closure and 60‑day roadmap

High‑level talks between the United States and Iran began at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan. The summit aimed to build on the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and set a 60‑day roadmap for a broader nuclear agreement, a cease‑fire framework and the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until it receives a guarantee that the United States will uphold its cease‑fire commitments, linking the waterway’s status to progress on the negotiations. The United States rejected Iran’s claim of control and said commercial traffic continues. Both sides agreed to create a high‑level committee to oversee mediation, a mechanism for future technical talks, and a communication line to avoid incidents in the strait.

The talks also established working groups on nuclear issues, sanctions and dispute resolution, and pledged periodic reporting by senior negotiators. Mediators highlighted “encouraging advances” and a positive atmosphere during the first session.
