Lebanese army takes pilot‑zone control, ceasefire under test

Overview

The US‑brokered cease‑fire that started on 24 June 2026 remains formally in place, yet sporadic violations persist. A 27 June framework linked Israel’s phased pull‑out to a Hezbollah disarmament roadmap, and after a brief Israeli pause on 11 July, Lebanese leaders voiced frustration, with cleric Ali Fadlallah urging patience and Hezbollah‑aligned MP Ali Fayyad condemning Lebanese authorities.

On 20 July the Lebanese Armed Forces entered the three pilot zones – Froun, Srifa and Zawtar al‑Gharbiya – assuming sole security responsibility, inspecting for Hezbollah weapons and beginning the phased Israeli withdrawal agreed in the framework. The US State Department called the move a direct outcome of recent talks in Rome and said Washington will continue to work with both sides. Israel confirmed the pilot programme is under way but will retain a security zone until Hezbollah is fully disarmed; Hezbollah rejected the framework, demanding a conditional pull‑back linked to broader US‑Iran negotiations.

Displaced residents have started to return, though some locals dispute that the towns were ever occupied by Israeli forces. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met US officials in Washington and is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump, underscoring high‑level diplomatic backing.

UNIFIL continues to describe the southern front as fragile and has pledged to reinforce its presence as cease‑fire talks proceed in Rome. The situation remains volatile, with diplomatic, political and security initiatives unfolding side‑by‑side.
