Irapuato, Mexico records 7 child deaths from armed attacks in 2026

In 2026, seven minors have been killed in armed attacks in Irapuato, Guanajuato, making the municipality the highest in the state for child lethal violence, according to the Red por los Derechos de la Infancia en México (REDIM). The three most recent deaths occurred within a month, prompting the local Observatorio Ciudadano Irapuato ¿Cómo Vamos? to join calls for justice voiced by Bishop Enrique Díaz Díaz and demand greater security for children. Observatory director Raúl Calvillo urged citizens to press all three levels of government to restore peace.

Since 2017, the observatory has noted that criminal groups' aim is to control territory and destabilise rivals rather than specifically target children, but the broader lethal violence in the region has resulted in these tragic deaths.
