Overview

Since early June 2026, Irapuato has pursued an aggressive municipal security agenda, inaugurating a 241-million-peso Security Complex while confronting a rise in intentional homicides and child killings. The mayor’s “Sistema de Parques” program added a Japanese garden and a new river linear park in mid-July, while heavy rains at the end of July prompted an intensified flood-response effort. By late July, the municipal government expanded its long-term planning, allocating four million pesos to the “Dignificar tu Escuela” program and unveiling a 1,390-hectare Knowledge-Innovation master plan. However, infrastructure and bureaucratic challenges have intensified. In early August, federal deputy Diego Rodríguez Barroso accused the IMSS and the Treasury of maintaining a bureaucratic “carnival” that has stalled the construction of a 216-bed IMSS hospital. Concurrently, road maintenance on Paseo Irapuato and persistent potholes on the Libramiento Sur have caused significant traffic congestion and safety risks. Severe weather in mid-August caused significant damage, including a landslide at a Volkswagen dealership that sent six vehicles falling 20 meters. Intense rainfall, peaking at 384 mm/h in the northern zone, triggered widespread flooding in neighborhoods such as Los Encinos and La Gavia. In response, the municipal water authority, JAPAMI, announced a master plan to address 86 critical flooding points through new collectors, pumping stations, and riverbed cleaning. Additionally, the Director of Public Services reported that aging infrastructure at Mercado Hidalgo has caused leaks and drainage issues, prompting coordinated maintenance and long-term renovation plans. In early September, the municipal government expanded social initiatives, investing 1.86 million pesos through the “Beca Sí” program to provide scholarships to 400 students. The city also launched the “Miércoles Ciudadano” program in rural Venado de Yostiro to provide essential civil and medical services. To address road damage from the rainy season, the city has maintained a permanent pothole repair operation.
