Irapuato reports rise in organized‑crime homicides and expands child abuse prevention efforts

In May 2026, the Irapuato Citizens' Observatory recorded 37 intentional homicides, a 23% increase from the same month in 2025. The report attributes 93% of these deaths to organized‑crime groups, with firearms used in 93% of the killings. Victims were 89% male and 11% female, and 84% died at the scene. Police detained 12 suspects linked to high‑impact crimes, and neighborhoods such as San Antonio Texas and Villas de San Cayetano experienced multiple victim counts.

The municipal DIF office strengthened its child sexual abuse prevention program, citing that one in four girls and one in six boys in the area are affected. Through the “Generando Espacios de Paz” project, DIF visited 62 schools and reached over 14,000 students, promoting body safety, signal detection, and reporting. A new child‑protection guide and a 24‑hour hotline (462 400 3333) were also launched to assist victims and families.
