Iraq achieves full sovereignty as International Coalition mission ends

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced on Iraq's National Day that the country has achieved full sovereignty following the conclusion of the International Coalition's military mission on September 30, 2026. Al-Zaidi stated that Iraq now maintains complete control over its territory, airspace, and decision-making, emphasizing that all weapons are under the authority of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Reflecting on the nation's history, the Prime Minister noted that Iraq was the first Arab nation to join the League of Nations and played a role in founding the United Nations. He addressed the country's political challenges since 2003, highlighting the importance of the permanent constitution and the peaceful transition of power.

On the economic front, al-Zaidi outlined plans to diversify the economy and strengthen the private sector. Key initiatives mentioned include the ‘Development Road Project’ to position Iraq as a regional trade and energy hub, the ‘Million Plots Initiative’, and the establishment of a ‘Fund for Future Generations’. He also committed to continuing anti-corruption efforts and implementing a performance-based budget to ensure government spending yields measurable results.
